TENTANG TOLSTOY
Count Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born on the family estates of Yasnaya Polyana in the province of Tula in 1828, into a family ennobled by the Peter The Great. He was educated privately and then studied law and Oriental languages at Moscow and Kazan Universities. He returned to Yasnaya where he remained until 1851 when he enlisted in the Army of the Caucasus. Here he began to see the problems of the Russia society structure, and a year later he started his autobiographical trilogy, Child-hood, Boyhood, and Youth. He served in the Crimean War but retired from the Army after the fall of Sevastopol. Several years in St Petersburg society followed before he returned to Yasnaya and married Sophie Andreyevna Behrs in 1862. It was a very happy marriage and during the first fifteen years they had thirteen children.
War and Peace was begun in 1862 and finished seven years later. Anna Karenina was completed in two years, in 1877. After these two great novels, Tolstoy abandoned his beliefs and way of living for simplicity of peasant life, and describe the changeover in Confession, published in 1822. Several other books followed including The Death of Ivan Ilych and Resurrection. Because of his new beliefs, family life became unbearable and in October 1910 Tolstoy escaped from home with Alexandra, his youngest daughter and only confidante. He became ill at a little railway station in central Russia and died in the stationmaster’s room in early November.
