SINOPSIS

In presenting this novel by Rabindranath Tagore in a shortened form, i must acknowledge his supremacy as a poet and writer.

Few have equaled his skill in depicting the Indian scene with such vivid Indian personalities, such typically Indian problems. Few have written with such insight, such mystic vision.

For those reading English in not too difficult a vocabulary, this story is a fascinating one, and I hope it will encourage them to read more Tagore. ‘The Wreck’ was published in English in 1921.

What made Tagore call this story ‘The Wreck’? More, I think, than the overturning of the boats in the river. Are we to think of Kamala’s happiness as being so nearly wrecked by unlucky circumstance and unkind convention? Or is ‘The Wreck’ the breaking of the link between Ramesh and Hemnalini? Their affection seems to be broken on the rocks of mistrust, tradition, and family interference. As the story ends, we pity them both.

Perhaps Tagore intends us to notice how the lives of four people are almost wrecked – two of them entirely – through the rigid conventions of the day.

The background of the story gives us an interesting sidelight on Indian family life.

The foot-notes are intended mainly for non-Indian students.
